Cafe Divano is one of those honest "Local" small mama papa coffee shop with heavenly comfort fresh baked goods that can rival your grandmother's delivered like clockwork every morning and surely the most popular muffins (monkey nut, zucchini chocolate) get sold out daily by 9-10am.
Price wise they are always more expensive than Starbucks and Waves. What they offer is superior baked goods, but man the coffee sucks.
_The good:
Muffins, if you get them fresh in the morning, have crusty crunchy top and moist center. Once last 9am, it's not quite the same. The cookies though are always thick tasty and satisfying, and they are good throughout the day. Their scones (earl grey blueberries) are heavenly buttery but don't forget to ask for more butter!
_The bad:
Their coffee is consistently on the acidic side (we alternate between the Port Moody and the Coquitlam City Centre locations) so we figured it's the beans they use, probably too young - even a skilled barista could not do anything about bad beans. So we usually drown their coffee with heavy cream to cover up the acidity.
_How to survive a bad coffee-go for tea!
If cream is not your thing, go with their tea-they are great! Served in nice glass tea pot and refill hot water-it can go much further distant than the coffee.
_Others:
Decor wise there is nothing special but there are sufficient numbers of arm chairs cramped in with hard chairs and bistro tables. The acoustics is alright but once the cafe gets crowded the reverberations could send pulses to my brain and give me a headache. Hence I prefer to buy what I need and enjoy the rest outdoor at Lafarge lake across the street or sit outside.
_Over the past 10 years we had seen price increase admits fierce competition of other coffee places, yet Caffe Divano had never fail to retain its loyal customers like ourselves, until recently when they ditched their reward program (aka Belly scanned card) where occasionally you get a free item.
_How to take in the food and leave the bad:
We still go there but only for the baked goods and take it to go where we get better coffee elsewhere. It's already been 10 years I don't have high hopes they will upgrade the coffee beans anytime soon.

Ironically I don't go to this place for the coffee. You either love it or hate it. Having been a barista in my youth I can appreciate a good cup of joes. Often I have found the Pallet Roasters brand to be overtly acidic.
Coffee (variety of drinks) 6/10
Tea on the other often pleasantly surprises me. (Though I normally prefer coffee over tea.)
Tea 8/10
What is the jewel of Cafe Divano is their pastries. Fresh, wholesome, Canadiana, earthy goodness. Hard to resist. (Except the rhubarb pie.).
Baked goods 9/10
Ambiance of the place would be described as cozy and comfortable. Though on crowded days, I find the seating to be too close as neighbouring conversations spill over. On the walls you get local artists' paintings for sale. Often of a blank scenery which is of a decorative variety as opposed to be thought provoking types.
Ambience so/so 7/10
Service is a mixed bag. Sometimes the young students are cheerful and friendly, other times they are moody and grumpy. Turn over rate seems extremely high. Every 3-4 months are new faces.
Service 5/10
Value:
Although drinks wise they are competitively priced but their pastries are pricier than average. Again with slightly above par goods this is okay priced. 7/10
Overall score:-
Coffee 6/10
Tea 8/10
Baked goods 9/10
Ambiance 7/10
Service 5/10
Value 7/10
Total score 42/60 = 70%
Summary skip the coffee if you don't like acidic coffee, go during off-peak times early to catch their baked goods fresh. -

The teenage staff need better customer service training. 3 girls behind the counter were busy gabbing, they did not care customers were waiting to order. 1 young Asian guy cleaning up was the only helpful one. Coffee was weak. I'm not a big fan of mega chains like Starbucks, but business like this one should be replaced.

I woke up super early so I decided to get myself some breakfast and coffee. The sun was out and the birds were chirping and I was feeling good! I went to Cafe Divano as I love their baked goods and coffees and they just have a super cozy atmosphere. Perfect for mornings. Today I got their "Divano Breakfast Sandwich" which was good but small and new "Maui Muffin" which is filled with mango, pineapple and coconut. The combination sounded SO good but I'm not sure if it's the one I got but it was soooooo beyond dry and stale. And the service I've been receiving lately at Divano is quite cold and rude.. Such a disappointing visit, might be a long time until I return.
I'm giving it a 2 because although my visit this time and service was horrid, my past visits have been solid.
